The Credit Union Spirit Embodied: Carol Schillios

Posted by Trey Reeme on September 20th, 2007

I ran into Carol Schillios in Washington last week. Every time I see her, I see the credit union spirit embodied. Were Ed Filene still with us, Carol would be on his Google Talk list.

If you’ve never met Carol, here’s who you’re missing:

Carol recently honored us as the first recipient of the Credit Union Global Spirit Award for translating philosophy into actions.

Thank you, Carol. We can’t express how much we admire you for what you do for the movement and for the world.

Carol is the best and so are you guys. It’s great that the award you just received is a grassroots type of honor.

There are many awards given in our industry to those that have served. But they mostly honor the past. Not the present and most importantly the future.

Since the first time I met you guys I knew you were the next Edward Filenes (without the department store, oh, and living in Indiana and Texas instead of Boston).

Keep stirring it up and holding our feet to the fire! As Carol so beautifully shows us every day – we have to do SOMETHING. You can’t NOT do something to help people.

    Trey,

What a great reminder of what is important. Carol seems like an awesome, selfless person who is doing good through the credit union movement. Kinda puts warring credit unions in perspective.

    Thanks,

    Tim

Carol embodies the authentic credit union spirit. Thank you for making me aware of the work of the foundation. I’ll keep Fabric of Life in my favorites list. Ginny

Funny, when I was at NCUF I set them up on YouTube and that video was the reason why.

When I saw the first cut, I thought the same thing – what an amazing person and story…and I wanted to share it with the world! It’s by far the most viewed of all the Foundation videos (for good reason).

And congrats to Trabian! You deserve it.

Thanks for posting this Trey. I echo all of the above. Carol is a true agent of change. Now it’s time for us to go out and do that “one small thing”.

I finally was able to hear Carol speak at last week’s WCUL Convention and I was blown away. I’ve heard her name tossed around in many different CU circles but to finally hear about the work she has done was amazing.

I would truly love to be a volunteer with Fabric of Life and visit Africa to see first hand the work she has done. I happened to mention her work to my wife and I think she’s already got her bags back to go.

Congrats on the award guys…you deserve it. Oh and look at me I’m finally posting comments.

Amazing woman with obvious passion to make a difference. The world could certainly use more like her!

Congrats on the award. Could you please provide more background on the award?

    Have a nice weekend all.

P.S. We just signed Lending Club over our big competitors like RightNow. P2P lending here we come.

    Thanks, Chuck -

Carol recently came across a “real little guy” plaque she received years ago and decided it deserved to be turned into an award for philosophy in action.

It wasn’t an award we applied for, and Carol will be giving it annually to a group she feels is making a difference in the movement.

Each year’s recipients get to recommend nominees for the honor the next year, with the winner to be selected by Carol.

At CBC, we’ve recently worked with Carol and her team on some Fabric of Life materials, and it’s really cool to see how passionate they are about their work. If we can all maintain half that passion in our daily work, we’ll all be in great shape!
