Gene Blishen is GonzoBanker of the month

Posted by Brent Dixon on July 21st, 2008

The brilliant and sometimes hilarious folks at GonzoBanker have written up Gene Blishen as GonzoBanker of the Month. Gene is General Manger of mac-only Mt. Lehman Credit Union, located just outside of Vancouver.

If you work in the industry (or don’t, for that matter), Gene is a person you should get to know. He’s a creative, people-driven thinker, and if you have a conversation with him you’re guaranteed a head full of new ideas.

One of the things I love about Gene’s story is that his credit union, Mt. Lehman, while a fraction of the size of other CUs in his area, is light years ahead with it’s mobile banking offering. Cooltowns.

It was only a matter of time! Gonzo Banker = Gene Blishen (GB = GB).

Morriss:After BCBDallas, we were all sitting around talking to Gene about his individualized approach to member service. One of the questions that came up was, “What if your credit union grows beyond the point where you can help your members on such a specific and personal level?”

Gene said he’d train leaders from the inside to plant and grow new credit unions out from Mt. Lehman CU. They stay small, focused and agile, while the movement continues to grow.

    How cool.

Small, focused, and agile…there’s a concept we’d all benefit from adopting! The “Growth at any cost” mentality irritates me to no end.

Gene and Mt. Lehman are perfect examples of how “credit unioning” should be executed. Pick a target market. Serve that group as well as you possibly can. Love them. They’ll love you back.
